3 simple steps to create your unique selling proposition (USP)

What is a unique selling proposition?

Your USP is a marketing strategy designed to set your brand apart from your competition. It’s part of the reason people choose to buy your product or service instead of your competitors. Think of it as your secret sauce!

“A UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION IS A STATEMENT YOU CHOOSE TO EMBODY THAT DIFFERENTIATES YOUR BRAND FROM YOUR COMPETITORS. – SHOPIFY”

How to create your unique selling proposition

Working out your USP can feel tricky. Unless you have no competitors, it’s not your product, price, or service. You need to focus on one of the biggest benefits clients receive when they choose you. Once you’ve nailed your USP be sure to include it in your marketing strategy.

Know you need to walk the walk here – if you come up with something quirky to stand out and it’s not authentic, you’ll drive people away. If you’re stuck, ask people you’ve worked with what attracted them to you.

If you haven’t worked with anyone yet – don’t worry! All brands start somewhere and you can research brands you align with to come up with some ideas. As your brand grows, you can update your USP.

Use these 3 easy steps to create your unique selling proposition

Step 1

List all the benefits a client gets from choosing your brand and what you have to offer

Step 2

Review the list and remove any of the benefits that could be offered by your competitors

Step 3

Pick your top three. When you’re choosing, keep your ideal client research in mind. Your USP needs to not only resonate with you, but appeal to the people you want to sell to.
